Essential Items for Your Emergency Backpack

There are a few must have things in your emergency backpack, in this blog post you will find a list of items that will make you feel prepared in case of an emergency. There will also be a few recommendations for locations to keep emergency backpack(s).

As this piece is being written, some major seismic activity is happening in Puerto Rico and there are some major wildfires happening in Australia. These fires have claimed 25 human lives, about 500 thousand animal lives, and more than 2,000 homes have been destroyed. Authorities are concerned this will turn into a ‘mega blaze’.

Meteorologists in Puerto Rico are urging the public to be prepared and equip their emergency backpack with essential items.

With that being said, feel free to customize this list and add whatever you deem necessary.

Emergency Supply Checklist

Keep in mind that, in most cases, some of these things may make you comfortable and calm, your priorities should be fresh water, food, clean air, and maybe a first aid kit. These three items, or four if it includes the first aid kit, are what you really need. Try to have supplies for four days. You should have a big one and a portable version with the bare necessities to take on the go.

Water and Food

This is one of the most (if not the most important) important parts of the backpack. Food and water are essential to life and survival.

Idealistically, every person in the house should have their own emergency kit. If there are any children or infants their emergency supplies should be close to them and their guardian, in case their supplies can’t be reached in time of an emergency, the caregiver should have a combined kit that includes the child or infant’s survival/entertainment items.

Keep at least a three-day supply of water per person, if you live in a warmer climate more water may be necessary.

Store at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food, these foods require no refrigeration, preparation or cooking and little or no water. Additionally, pack a manual can opener, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils. The adults’ kit should also carry a knife.

FOOD IDEAS

-Protein or fruit bars, granola, nuts or dried fruits

-Cereal, crackers

-Food for infants, canned meals, vegetables and juices

-High energy snacks, comfort snacks

First Aid Kit

If an emergency occurs someone may be scratched, burned or suffering other injuries. If the injuries do not require immediate medical attention, you can most likely treat them yourself.

FIRST AID KIT MUST HAVES

-Two pairs of sterile gloves

-Sterile dressings to stop bleeding

-Soap, antibiotic towelettes, and antibiotic and burn ointment to prevent infection

-Different size bandages

-Eye wash solution

-Thermometer and non prescription drugs

-Prescribed medical supplies and prescribed medication taken daily (remember to change them every now and then to ensure they are not expired)

Stay Alert

For this you will most likely need the following:

-Flashlight

-Battery-powered radio

-Batteries

-Extra set of clothes

-Dust mask or cotton t-shirt or cloth to breath clean air

-Matches in a waterproof container

-Personal hygiene items (and feminine supplies if needed)

-Copies of important documents in a waterproof portable container

-Trash bags

-Emergency Blanket

-Whistle to signal for help

Remember the important needs of the people in your unit. Infants, children, seniors and people with disabilities may need extra items for their emergency kit. Please include items for your pets because they’re family too! Do not forget to ask a doctor or professional about any additional item necessary for your kit.

The best places to have emergency kits are at the exit of the house, at the safe room and the portable one on your daily purse, briefcase or school bag. It’s key to set an accessible location in case that an event leaves you without communication so that all parties can arrive safely and help with the worry.

This was published when Puerto Rico was facing earthquakes. This list provides information that can clarify the essential items people should prioritize in case of an emergency or natural disaster.
